My daughter's first driving lesson(No Audi stuff)
Okay, so she's only 10 but the kid can reach the pedals with the seat
maxed forward. I elected to use the Scirocco due to some pretty obvious
facts I don't need to mention but I did learn that it is time readjust
the parking brake cables. Tiffany was a real trooper. She could of
backed out but she held a stiff upper lip and fastened her safety belt.
I should add that there is an ever steepening slope to my driveway and
it is a half circle. The plan "was" to back the car out of the carport
then pull forward around the half circle. After that back the car up
along the side of the house.
Now I recognized that this was going to be a challenge to the little
rascal but I felt it was time to teach her before some "real" idiot
does. Yes this may raise the question that I maybe a real idiot.
Anyway, she did pretty well starting it and she did okay saying "yeah
dad" and "okay dad" so I figured we were good to go. She backed the car
up well provided I held onto the parking brake. Getting going up was
going well after several attempts to balance the clutch and throttle.
That is until MOM stepped out of the house.
At that point Tiffany was smiling at mom while the car started getting
up steam. I said "Tif, start turning the wheel, Tif let up on the ....".
It was at this point that I discovered it is time to tighten the
parking brake cables. While Tiffany is laughing her head off I'm
cranking on the wheel, hauling up the brake and yelling "Tif, push in
the clutch! Push in the CLUTCH!". Well, as I realized the parking brake
wasn't doing the job, I finally abandoned it for the ignition switch
where we finally stopped the car ... on top of the wife's flower bed she
and our neighbor had been working on.
Carol opted to ignore this in favor of a rather wicked look at me. She
then left to pick up our son avoiding the situation entirely.
As it happens we got the wheels lined up just right to miss flattening
the flowers. Luckily for me I removed my steel oil pan guard, otherwise
we would of plowed them all up! So, other then an inevitable comment or
two from Carol and one smashed plastic butterfly, ... well lets leave it
at that.
Folks, I'm still chuckling about this one and I'm looking forward to
next time!
Cheers and thanks for the bandwidth!
