Thanks for the 5kt info!

While troubleshooting my cooling system (I had no "low coolant level" light AND
a dead coolant temp guage after replacing my water pump -- a dangerous
combination) I discovered "the magic fuse".
Fuse 27 in the '91 200 is listed in the fuse box cover as "eng temp sensor #2"
or some such nonsense; in the Bentley as "Electronic injection system" and when
you follow the wiring diagram for two different motors in the German manual "so
wird's gemacht" ( very loosely translated -- "how it's done") you see it also
connects the coolant system warning and the oil warning. My car got good
mileage and had no trouble starting and had good power -- ie, no symptoms of an
ECU problem. I checked fuse 27 and it was indeed, blown. BTW the Autocheck
system showed a big yellow "OK". I assume the system thinks "no news is good
news". After replacing the fuse all warnings functioned normally.
As a matter of course now, when changing oil or doing a tune-up, I check ALL
fuses. Dunno if you have a similar fuse on the '83 or '85 motors, but I'd start
here.
