Re: Noisy Lifters

If ya lifters are a tickin, get a fixin!

If the warm-up test and 2000 rpms doesn't make the ticking go away,
then its time to change them lifters!

Not a difficult, or expensive job, just takes maybe a couple of hours!

OEM Lifters can purchased from many sources, other than a dealership,
and
since VW's use the same lifters, makes them even more readily
available!
Last set I acquired were $13 each, so $130 for a set of ten! If your
really,
I mean REALLY good, you can figure out which one's are ticking, and
which ones are
not and only replace the bad ones! But more often that not, there are
bad ones that dont even tick! As measured with the wooden stick test!

Your better off replacing the whole set!

The problem with bad hydraulic lifters, is the cam runs at ZERO
clearance
to the lifters. The "ticking" sound is the hammering of the cam lobe
against
the lifter and the top of the valve stem!

Personally I do not like my cam lobes hammering away at the lifters
and
valve stems. Sure you could ignore it and probably nothing will ever
happen!
(As stated by other people on the list) However my engine often see's
the
"higher" rpm bands, and this is exactly where the hydraulic lifters
are the most
vulnerable. This is where, if something can go wrong, WILL! For me
$130
every several years is "cheap insurance" compared to a new head!

This is why I change my lifters when they tick!

Plus after doing it several dozen times, its something I can do in my
sleep!

As for price to do the job, if you dont do it yourself, its gonna cost
ya!
