Help, AC programmer question

I know this is a common topic, but I could use some claification. I took my
'87 5KCST to a shop to have the freon checked and recharged if needed.
Hadn't used the AC this spring. Shop said compressor wouldn't kick in;
wanted to replace a relay. OK, replaced relay, still no compressor. (Works
fine if relay is jumped.) Told me I needed a new programmer, as the ground
circuit for the aformentioned relay is energized by the programmer.

Its been a while since I had a programmer apart, and the car, with the
Bentley manuals, is still at the shop, 20 miles away. It is true that the
ground circuit goes through the programmer, or does it originate in the AC
head? If it is the programmer, can this circuit be repaired, or am I going
to be shopping for a replacement programmer? I do have a replacement AC
head, but not a spare programmer. Any advice/tips would be appreciated! I
need to get the compressor to run before the rest of the system can be
checked. The shop doesn't want to check freon levels and such with a
jumpered relay.

Since there have been several 'parts for sale' posts recently, if anyone
has a gpood programmer for my '87 for sale, please contact me!

So far, I am facing a bill of $105.00 for work done, only to have the
knowledge that my AC isn't working. I must not have sacraficed enough to
the Audi gods recently...
