V8 transmissions

I just thought I should relay some of what I learned in my recent
experience with a failing transmission in my 90V8.  I was told by most I
talked to that they cannot be serviced and that I would be stuck buying
a rebuilt unit from Audi for about 5000.00 Plus labor.  This turns out
not to be true.  After searching around I found a local guy with
experience and good connections who was able to piece together all the
parts that were needed to completely rebuild my transmission.  It took 
1029.00 for the overhaul parts, 425.00 for the torque converter, 200.00
for various other parts and 1793.00 in labor plus tax for a grand total
of 3548.00 to get me a rebuilt transmission.  That is half the cost I
was originally anticipating.  It is a lot but I hope others don't buy
the notion that one has no other option than to go to the dealer and pay
the big bucks.
