Front oil seals on C-GT

I am replacing pump, idler pulley, and belt this weekend. It's quite
possible I will have replace the lifters too, but only later and after
the reassembly of the engine to "pump them up!" so I can check 'em under
proper conditions.
My question is: How do I "look at the front oil seals while I am there,
cam and main bearing?" The location of the cam seal is obvious, but is
the 'main bearing seal' in a removable housing mounted to the front of
the block and surrounding the crankshaft as it is on the 1.6
4-cylinder(my poor-man's Bentley, my Haynes, only has detailed oil seal
pictures for the 1.6 4cyl)...if so, I assume there is a gasket for the
housing too, right?
When checking these seals/gaskets, since it might be difficult with all
the gunk due to water pump leakage and other build-up, do I have any
special clues or signs that might hint at leakage(soft? cracked?, etc),
or is it a simple matter of looking for typical signs of oil leaking?
Should I replace them regardless? Are they expensive?(will help to
answer previous question)
