re: stainless hardware: more info
Read a good article in the June 1997 "Sail" magazine on use of stainless
steel hardware. It goes through the different stainless steel types (alloy
compositions) and has a few recommendations. Use 300-series stainless for
hose clamps. (316 preferred) Cheaper 400-series stainless steel screws are
often used, which can be detected by the fact that they will be strongly
magnetic. The better grades are not magnetic or not strongly magnetic. I
know that in my car, the screws on various hose clamps are in poor shape;
I'll be returning the replacement clamps I just bought to Pep Boys and buying
me some marine hardware.
