Very quick reply but a) get a SWR meter at Radio
 Shack (hint: returnable if you don't need to keep it!)
and b) check where you grounded the radio - ground to
the body is better than to the battery.  You can also
try a noise filter if you must, but a good ground will
fix it in most cases.
