La-Reno Adventure
I had a great weekend, driving up the eastern sierras
from LA to Renu, where I got to drive my new rally car.
It is to be run in Socal Divisional as an Open 4WD entry.
Thanks to Mark and John Nelson for 1.) selling me a great
car, b.) host me and my SO for the weekend, III) showing
me a great time.
On the way home, up over Ebbetts Pass, which is the most
wickedly twisty, steep, and now freshly paved (< 1 week!)
bit of asphaslt in all of california, my 105K old quattro
started making some nasty noise at 5-10 psi of boost.
I suspect I now know what a turbo touching down sounds
like. I drove home easily, but think I may need some
serious work. The noise is NOT present at low boost or
idle, eliminating a melted cat, I think. Not much tinkling
sounds, more or a raspy grinding noise, metallic too! I babied
it home trying to run < 1-2 psi or less home (300 miles more)
I made it back, now for a post mortem...
