5KCSTQ - Wheel Bearing or C/V Joint Noise?
All:
Had a new noise make its' presence known on the commute in this morning.
It was a low-volume, quasi-rhythmic, clack coming from what sounded
like the right rear of the car. I have ruled out the driveshaft CV
because the noise occurred whether I was in gear or not (I've got a
5 Speed). Interestingly, I picked-up two riders (known as "slugs" in
the Wash, DC area) who sat in the back seat and the noise went away.
Dropped 'em off and it came back. I am leaning towards CV joint as
their weight (appeared to be a combined 400 lbs) would give the half-axle
a different angle.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. This noise is quite disconcerting,
particularly to my wife who asked whether the wheel was going to fall
off. Not a totally off the wall question I suppose.
TIA,
Mark Pollan, '86 5KCSTQ 223K Miles with as much rhythm as I.
P.S. I am still wondering where/how to lube the AC blower motor.
