This could be wear on the shaft splines,and is something we regularly see on 
CV'd independent rear ends.It may be possible to effect a fairly long term 
cure by turning the actual shaft around,if the ends are symmetric.This puts 
the thrust onto different sides of the splines.

I doubt if it is the actual CV joints, as they do not have any turning 
angles to accommodate,unlike the front ones.It is the turning angles that 
give them a hard time.Obviously they can and do wear out,but at a much 
slower rate at the rear than the front.
