I checked mine ('87 4kcsq) when doing  the timing belt and installing a
Schrick cam. There was no gap. None. Incidentally, the shaft on the '87 is
round not hexagonal.

My car has nearly 200k miles and, as I've said before, when I keep the oil
fresh and clean there is no noise from the pump. Dirty oil causes noisy
lifters and pump. usually takes a couple of oil changes to settle it down
again. Yes I am still using the original lifters.
