I wonder, considering almost all Audi vacuum pumps develop this problem
(including mine), has there been a TSB concerning it? Or an aftermarket
fix?

It would seem that either a slightly longer shaft or spring would eliminate
the gap and solve the problem. Or would that just destroy the pump
internals?

P.S.: Solved my '88 80Q A/C problem. I had no current to the compressor
clutch. I unplugged the relay (under the steering column), plugged it back
in, and the A/C works great! (O.K. it cycles too often, every 10 seconds,
but it's a start).
