trip computer

On my '89 100 (fwd), the only non-functioning component (other than
erratic A/C) seems to be the trip computer. It shows correct elapsed time
as well as average speed, but the MPG functions are kaput. Instantaneous
MPG reads a constant "5" while the other functions give varying, but
meaningless output. I suspect the "sender" unit on the fuel distributor is
at fault. The sender's connector looks OK, but I don't know what the
electrical output should be. Can the sender be removed and repaired or
adjusted? Any advice?

P.S. I've searched and read a lot of the archives, but don't see much
detail on this component.
