You may be correct regarding the 88. The M5 I was referencing was a
newer body style car (91 or so). I beat it but barely. My car was
running very well, pulling 2.0 bar max, and this was on the highway, not
the track (eg straight line accelleration).
As for cornering, on the EVOC high speed track (vs their slower
surface-street emulation track) I had no trouble keeping up with an 89
M3 through every corner. If passing were allowed I could have easily
done so on the straights. IMO the driver was not very good, but my 91
200q with Eibach/bilstein setup does pretty well, and TAP chip + quattro
pulled me through and out of the corners much faster than the M3. The M3
is better handling, but less powerful. I have to say, given my
experiences, the 91 200q with a few quality mods keeps up with the M5. I
believe UFO brakes record the same 70-0 numbers as the newer M5. On a
track, it would be a pretty even match-up. I have no experience with the
88 (older style) M5.
To wit, with my boost leak problem I raced and was gaining on a new M3
on the highway on the way home last night. I was faster until my boost
dropped off after 5k RPM from 1.9 to 1.7 at redline. At 1.7 I had gone
from pulling ahead to dead even, door handle to door handle (separate
lanes) - it was totally dead even. Don’t know about the state of tune of
these other cars - they were both cosmetically/exhaust modified, I don’t
know about the engines (chips?).
