I replaced a burned out lamp in the light switch of my 1984 80q with a
standard yellow LED with appropriate series resistor. It was completely
invisible. I had to extend its leads so that it was right up against the
surface of the switch and even then it was only visible in fairly dark
conditions.
OTOH, I replaced the burned out lamps in the window regulator switches of my
1983 Avant with miniature red LEDs and these worked really well. They were
visible in twilight conditions.
I think the reason for the difference is that red leds appear brighter than
yellow, and the plastic cover with the symbol on it is thicker in light
switches than in window switches.
