Longest timing belt ever...almost done!
Hi all!
Well, I performed a compression test on my I-5 that's making a horrific
racket and guess what!!?....She passed! Yeeaahh!!
She is...:
'86 Comm. Design Coupe GT N/A 2.2 I-5 with a Jacobs Omni-Pak
Ignition(....no serious engine mods) 169K very, very hard miles. Almost
all 109K I put on her were under full throttle and revved nearly to
redline before shifting. Engine was also subjected daily to very short
trips - i.e. started and then shut-down only miles later. I never
'warmed' her up...and I'm glad I didn't because now it's known to be
better to immediately put it in gear & drive slowly for a few minutes
than to sit and idle. Anyways...
Here are the results(FYI, and for those who live on the other side of
the pond, the bar readings are just primative conversions done simply by
lining up the corresponding numbers on the gauge itself):
Cylinder Compression(psi/bar) Difference between cylinders
_______________________________________________________________________
1 152 psi / 10.6 bar
11 psi
2 163 psi / 11.2 bar
09 psi
3 154 psi / 10.7 bar
12 psi
4 166 psi / 11.5 bar
00 psi
5 166 psi / 11.5 bar
Well within suggested specifications!!!...Right!? ;-) Seriously
though, is there anything that I should be able to interpret about these
results?? I received a message from another C-GT owner who performed the
same procedures and a compression test recently and got impressive
results(160/158/164/165/165) from his I-5 with at least 140K miles on
the odometer. Averaged out, my I-5 came to 160.2 psi, while his was
slightly better at 162.4 psi. So I am guessing all is well with my
Coupe, but cylinders 1 and 3 worry me slightly...is there anything to
actually be worried about? Thanks...again.
I'm going to flush the coolant system today and reattach all of the
belt driven accesories, at which point I can let her run for a few
minutes to pump oil back into the lifters and hopefully all the horrific
racket will go away!
Thank you ALL for all of your help. I could NOT have done it without
the LIST! Well maybe, but it would have taken much longer and I could
NOT have tolerated a simple timing belt procedure taking long at all!!!
;-)
