I can partially confirm this.  Yes, the Audi's and the VW's use a
similar design in the seat mounting, but some of the dimensions are
different.  IME, the tracks are set farther apart in the VW's.

I have a set of Recaro's from an 88-92 16V Jetta in my '85 GT right
now.  I did have to get out the torch and modify the rear mounts a bit.

The other thing to remember is that if you do this sort of swap, that
you will need to move the seatbelt latches from your existing seats over
to the new one.
