I understand completely ... there's still something "strange" about it that
I haven't come to grips with yet, either, but I think it has to do with how
to best get the car to rotate ... if you can't get it to move, you end up
having to drive around the understeer, which is usually the sloowwwww way
around the course. The car really only comes into its own when you've got
enough speed and/or power under foot to generate a large slip angle with the
tires ... say, from 40mph up in 2nd gear. This is the primary reason why
I've decided to try the Hoosier Autocrosser, which is a bias-ply tire. That
and the fact that it's an inch shorter (225/45-15).

This is very likely ... except for the first event, when I drove it on the
dead Yokohama street tires it had when I bought it, I've never been able to
get the car loose enough to even begin *threatening* to spin. The usual
method is to drive around the understeer in slower corners and "toss" the
car in the faster ones ... I know this isn't the ideal solution but there's
not much I can do about it given the constraints of the rules SCCA makes you
run under in the Stock classes. :^(
BTW, while I still think the car is capable of winning a trophy this year at
the Solo II Nationals -- pretty good for a 12-year old car, eh? -- it'll
take rain and lots of it to give it a shot at winning. At least if I'm
driving it, anyway...
