Hi Mark, I can't answer about the location of the turbo itself, but I 
have seen the intake manifold of which you speak...
It is a variable resistance design, similar that of the VW motorsport 
manifold for the VR6 motors.
I can't give all of the technical details, because I don't know them, but 
in laymens terms, the design of the manifold allows changes in the 
volume of air as well as the velocity of air.
This is the primary reason the RS2 has similar hp ratings as the S2/S4, 
but roughly 100 more lbs of torque.
