Hi,
All right guys, stop talking about your drives from Barstow to Tahoe, I am
sick of it :-) Lets talk about great drives in the midwest. Any
suggestions? I personaly prefer the driving in the midwest during
October and see the splendid fall foliage. I am more interested in drives in
IL, IA, WI and MN area. Come one guys, lets show these
Californians a thing or two.
Sorry Saqib but it just ain't gonna happen. I'm originally from SoCal and
just spent 3 years living in NE Iowa, right along the Mississippi River.
I am not knocking the area, it just can't offer up ANY driving experiences
which rival CA. I did have a few favorites there, but they were few, far
between, and short in distance once there.
For instance: Take Hwy 76 northwest out of Caledonia, MN. You will
make a couple of ninety degree turns with a mile or two of straight road
in between. Then the road follows down through a small "canyon"
formed by a small river. This is about a two mile stretch of closely
spaced, well engineered 25-50 mph corners. I usually turn around, go
back, and come thru again, just to make it worthwhile. Also, if there was
any traffic, I wait at the side of the road until a vehicle approaches from
behind, to give the traffic ahead as much time to navigate it as possible.
Interestingly, the fastest vehicles thru this stretch are local farm pickups.
But I would outpace them as well. Always tried to give other traffic a
safe margin, for them and for me :-).
Most of the roads that lead up thru the bluffs from the Mississippi are at
least somewhat entertaining, but their short and moderately traveled.
Just my $.02 worth.

PS. Spent seven hours in the seat Sunday exploring the area. Made it
up into NC, on the Blue Ridge Parkway for a short time and back and
forth across the NC/SC border on various roads. :-) :-) :-) :-)
This is gonna be fun....
