Very cheap insurance. Brake fluid is hygroscopic, which is a fancy way of
saying it absorbs water. The water accelerates acid and rust formation
throughout the entire system. It the old days it was routine to bleed the
brakes every 2 years with open systems. With the advent of closed systems in
the 60s, this fell into disuse. It takes 5-8 years for the damage to occur,
and people didn't keep cars that long anymore. With ABS systems, its VERY
important not to allow this to happen. Basically if you get a car used, it's
the first thing to do. If done regularly, brake system component life will
be tripled (15-20 years...).
