RE: quattro-digest V4 #803

No hard evidence. However, it gradually started to happen about 4 months after the switch (slight ticking sound increasing to a loud click in the end) and nothing else changed. The oil level was always kept to the proper level. Also, an automotive engineer friend of mine suggested that the synthetic oil caused a difference in pressure in the hydraulic lifters that wrecked them. In fact, I used Mobil 1 very successfully in a 1986 Chev Blazer for years...I've got nothing against synthetic oil.

Whoa, hold on here! How did using Mobil 1 (a generally LOVED and RESPECTED
engine oil) cause your lifters to go bad? I've heard that a broken-in
engine will leak synth oil when first introduced, but did your oil get so
low as to cause this type of damage?
