 I've done it more than 10 times - engine running with no ill effects...
 My procedure: Get engine warm, pull into car wash and shut engine off.
 spray engine with engine cleaner (use whole can).  Start car and rinse
 off engine.   I suppose covering the distributor with plastic would be
 a good idea if you're luck is used up for the month...year...

 Try and keep the spray stuff off the paint though.
