An article in Road and track several years ago had a very good solution for us 
pack rats.

Put trivial stuff in boxes with labels and date the boxes. Put dates each time 
you open a box for a part etc. If there is no date earlier than five years throw 
the box away without opening it. Life is short. Storage is expensive. 

The catch here is the definition of trivial.
