88 90 Q speedo problems

Friends,

My 88 90q's speedo unit keeps blowing fuses.

>From the Bentley, this fuse is the dash, reverse lights etc.

My mechanic said "Definitely the wires in the trunk shorting"

Has anyone else had the same problem and can back up this proposed
solution?  I'm going to do it myself and wish to know of any other
problems areas in this line.  Trust me, the mechanic gets plenty of
maintenance business from us already with our two Audi's.
