my little secret
I'm really president of AoA. Nah.
I want to share a tip with those of you who like me, eschew the
US speed limits. As you know, the Valentine One is reputed to
be the best detector out there, by far. But until you use one,
you will never know how great it is. The ability to count
multiple "bogeys", to pinpoint where they are (front/rear/side),
and another one I discovered today - I was cruising down the
parkway at about 80, other cars doing about 65-70, when I got a quick
"deetdeetdeet". I was able to nail the brakes and slow down enough so
that when the detector switched to "deeeeeeeeeee" mode (signalling a
radar lock, in Top Gun terms) I knew I was OK. The cop pulled out
shortly after I passed him, and pulled over an unsuspecting Shadow.
(side note - why must the cops always tailgate you before pulling you
over?)
So here's the secret. The V1 is $399, pretty hefty price for most of
us. I've tried to get a list discount, but no deal, the best I could
do was to find out about returned/refurbished units which are a bit
cheaper, and carry the same warranty. However...
There are a few revisions of the V1. The older ones can be upgraded,
at significant cost, and it takes a long time, which makes it more
attractive for those with $$$ to just buy a new one and sell the old.
The latest V1 adds rear laser, which even they admit is a marketing gimmic,
and better Ka band protection. Since Ka is not used around here, I found
a 2 year old V1 in rec.autos.marketplace and bought it for $175 including
shipping and COD charges. I've seen others out there.
So... scour the net and arm yourselves. The first time it saves your
tail you will forget about the price tag, even if you paid full price!
