spark plugs

No - by the _amount_ of gas you use.  It's a sign that the engine is running 
for most of its operating period on a weak mixture.  IMO the best thing to do, 
if you're not mechanically inclined, is to find a _good_ (personal 
recommendation from someone who _knows_) Bosch fuel injection specialist.

If your usage is predominantly highway cruising at gentle speeds, this is a 
fairly normal state to find the plugs in after 18k miles.

Not necessarily, but it's borderline.  Brush them stiffly with a brass wire 
brush and check the gaps.

At 18k, if I were to be investigating problems on your car, I'd change them.
