I have a Momo competition.  It has 3 set screws which anchor the knob to the
shift stalk, then a metal piece screws over that to cover the screws.  Very
clean appearence.  It is for sale....if you'd like.  Also, I cannot speak for
other knobs, this is the only one I have experience with.  No modification
neccessary.
