1993 90 ignition switch recall and repair
As you may recall, the ignition switch on my 1993 90CS
crapped out right around the time there was much talk
of the recall for '94 Audis with similar problems...
I spoke with AoA, and they determined that my car was
not covered by the original recall. They did say that
they might be able to cover it if the dealer determined
that the cause was the same.
Being new to the Pittsburgh area, they directed me to
Day Audi in Monroeville.
Within 30 mins., they'd figured out that it was the
ignition switch (no duh) and began playing phone tag
with AoA to see if they would cover the replars.
While this was going on, the service manager kept trying to
convince me to authorize them to start the repairs in
anticipation of AoA's approval. He said the total bill would
be $400-$500, but that he could authorize half of that on
the spot, if I let them start work.
Now, I know Audi's are expensive, but $400-$500??? I was
beginning to get suspicious. The service manager persisted:
he attempted scare tactics (you'll blow you're starter if
you don't get it fixed!) and continued to offer 50%.
After about three hours, AoA finally approved 80% coverage
(even though the part that failed was the same as in the recall,
the symtoms were different, so they wouldn't cover 100% --
sounds slimey to me).
At this point I wasn't going to argue, having wasted half a
work day any how, and took the deal. My cost: $44.10, which I
could live with.
They fixed the switch okay, but left greasy hand prints all
over the interior and metal shavings on the floor. They
also f***ed the intrument cluster: the backlight for the
clock doesn't work any more and the idiot light bulbs don't quite
line up with the colored lenses.....
I was going to take it back to have them fix the stuff they
broke, I don't want to give them the chance to break anything else.
Anyone know how to fix these problems??
So, a mega thumbs-down to Day Audi in Pittsburgh, PA. Stay
away.
