clutch repair cost trade-offs

someone continues:

Sorta true. You can engine break using synchros too, and you need
not double clutch to engage the brakes on a hill.

I used to double-clutch as my standard driving style, until I had to replace
the clutch hydraulics ($1000) at 75k (miles), while the clutch surfaces were
strong
out past 180k (miles).

Maybe connected, maybe not, but you certainly trade synchro wear for
hydraulic actuator and release bearing wear.

Any other options? (espexcially those based on experience :-))
