double clutching

Someone sez:

>>The entire purpose of
>>d.c. is to maintain the ability to accelerate through and out of a turn,
>>and to use the natural friction of the engine to slow the vehicle AND NOT
>>THE BRAKES.

I disagree. Double-clutching is a method, and can be used for several
purposes. However, it is always used to allow synchronization of the gears.

One purpose is to shift without synchros. Another is to reduce wear on the
synchros. A third is to achieve faster shifting than the [slow ro worn]
synchros
might allow.

For the record, to "DC", you:

1) open clutch
2) remove car from gear
3) match revs to spindle speed (best guess)
4) re-open clutch
5) engage gears at matched (or similar) revs
