Volkswagen To Open Brazilian Plant

       BRASILIA, Brazil (AP) - German auto giant Volkswagen and its
 wholly owned subsidiary Audi announced Wednesday a $750 million
 investment to build a new assembly plant in southern Brazil.
       The announcement was made by Herbert Demel, the president of the
 Volkswagen Brazilian subsidiary, in a meeting with Trade and
 Industry Minister Francisco Dornelles.
       The new plant, expected to completed in late 1998, will be built
 near the Parana state capital of Curitiba, 820 miles south of
 Brasilia. It will produce the Audi A-3, the Golf and the Passat
 models and will employ some 3,000 workers.
       The output of the new factory is expected to be 700 vehicles a
 day - 150 Audi A-3s, 150 Passats and 400 Golfs.
       Volkswagen already has two plants in the state of Sao Paulo and
 one in Rio de Janeiro state.
