new stereo for A4?

I want to get an aftermarket cd player for my A4.  I don't want a changer -
just a single in-dash cd unit.  I do have some concerns about putting one in
though.  
1)  The stock radio is fairly long.  Is there anything that can be used to
fill up the extra space a smaller cd unit couldn't fill up without it looking
terrible?
2)  Will I loose my 'gala' feature and the radio station call letters popping
up and music type popping up with a different unit?

What have most of you A4 owners done?
