Andrew,

I found a VW rabbit (type 1) in a junk yard with AC, and 
removed it's aux. fuse panel.  I rewired the aux panel
by removing the old one.  The problem was really the 
poor contactors.  Some of those had to be replaced.
Someonw said "staylock" vaiety works as a replacement.

I have also had problems two other places.  The connector 
to the fan itself had to be reconditioned, and another
relay in the main box powers the aux panel AND the blower
and radio.  I have yet to drop the main panel, but have
squirted it with contact cleaner.  A wiggle ussually solves
that one.

One way around this is to avoid the whole factory harness and 
go with seperate lines to aftermarket sensors.  One friend did
so, adding in a manual bypass and the AC circuit as well.
