Emission Control System (ECS) light

On my way back from a trip earlier this evening, the ECS light came on. This
occurred when I was on the highway travelling about 70 mph. Didn't notice any
change in performance when the light came on. When I stopped for gas and shut
the car off and restarted it, the light did not come back on again for the
rest of the trip. So what components are monitored by this system? Just as a
sidenote, I have been noticing a "rotten eggs" type smell eminating from the
car, generally after I've parked it and shut it off. Thanks for any help.
