Audi 4ksq stock radio - bulb replacement procedure

  Many thanks to the listers who provided insight, Mike Veglia, Kirby
Smith et al. I got enough info to dive in
and fix an annoying problem. Though those who know me will tell you, it
doesn't take much to get me futzing
with something...

So, here goes. You may need up to three of the grain of wheat bulbs
used for many interior illumination tasks.
>There is a Radio Shack 55mA flying lead bulb as well as a 60mA bipin
bulb that will work. They are tiny 12V
>bulbs; not too many choices at Radio Shack to confuse you. Use shrink
fit on the solder connections. Best
>to cover the bulb with a miniature red or orange bootie to get the
color right (as well as dim enough).
>There may be one already there.

I got mine at the local auto parts store for pennies, no soldering
needed, an orange gel (cellophane) sheet between
the lamps and the LCD provide proper coloring...

Remove the radio from the dash (two u-shaped pieces of coat hanger, and
a finger in the cassette socket);
Disconnect wiring from radio;
Remove the knobs;
Remove the face plate ( four black(?) tabs )
  - one tab on each side, one above the cassette opening, one below the
volume knob;
The bulb for faceplate lighting is now visible, near the volume knob;
Gently pull the LCD away from head unit ( pressing white(?) plastic tabs
) to gain access to backlighting bulbs;
Behind the LCD you will find two "grain of wheat" bulbs in sockets
  - These are wired in series, so if one bulb fails, they both go out...
poor design or procrastination dissuader???
  - Access to these bulbs is narrow, hope you have small fingers.

All three bulbs in my radio were in sockets, other may find them
soldered in place. Good luck then...

Installation is reverse of removal ;-)
