Buy A4 or wait for Synchro Release in the US?

I'm on the verge of buying a '98 A4 Quattro, but have been a little nervous
about the $ and even more about the fact that the closest dealer to me is 1
hour+ away. Now I hear about a new '98 Passat with the same engine and a
AWD system like the A4 is out.  Does anyone have specific information on
availability of this in the US? There is nothing on the VW site (US), but
plenty of great info at http://www.passat.de
What about thoughts on the comparison of these two vehicles. The Passat is
gonna be cheaper and I'll have a local dealer....

Any information would be appreciated either via direct email or through
this list.
