I too have BTDT with the little hose and took the same course of
action.  A year later everything's fine.  I did wrap the hose with
electrical tape to seal the crack and put a tie wrap around this to
keep the tape from coming loose.  I don't think there is too much
vacuum in the system - just poor hose design.
