John,  if you have not replaced the fine adjustment
rof on the linkage, this would be a good time.  It
SHOULD solve the problem, but even if it is internal (doubtful)
it is a good upgrade.  The captured bushing design is better
than the original design.  About $35 for the piece I think.
I think there is something in the archive several years ago
from me on the installation method.  No to find it!?!

This piece attaches from the top of the tranny housing to
the shifter rod and provides a fulcrum for twisting action.
Bad access to 1-2 or 5-R are symptoms.  Good luck.
