Euro I-5 on unleaded fuel?

Hi all,

This is a question on behalf of a prospective Audi-owning friend of mine.
He's looking at buying an early-80s Audi with the 5-cylinder engine.
Can any of the european listers confirm if this engine runs on unleaded
fuel? The dealer doesn't know (too much rich people with new Audis here)
and the books don't say. I guess it does need high-octane fuel, but no
mention of hardened valve seats...

PS just found out today that my broken windscreen washer pump is shared
with the '86 VW Polo. $5 for a very good used replacement. All Audis I saw
were missing theirs... sometimes it's nice that Audi's part of VW.
