BTDT on my '87 5KCSQT. The shift boot attaches to the plastic base
with a big rubber o-ring. I had the same problem with my car, bought a 
new base from Audi.

It is actually different, I compared it to my '85 5KS. In the end I spent 
about $15-20 for the plastic base from Audi and all has been well
since.
