Cupholders?

A Cup-le of questions:
(1)  I was under the impression that the infamous Passat cupholder
was a "stick-on" jobber?  I assumed that one need only remove a
double sided tape or apply contact cement and viola!  Is this
accurate?
(2)  Also was thinking this cupholder was a under $20 item?  How much
have you folks paid?
For those with inquiring minds, the following series of events
ocurred. A. I ordered a Passat cupholder from Linda. B. It listed for
$36...Qlist $28 C. Picked up on Sat and discovered that it needs to be
screwed onto the center console after sliding it up from the bottom of
the console where the carpet meets the plastic.  Conclusion...is this
the right one?
I'm willing to give this a try, although I would have preferred a
stick on (hence removeable) variant.  So if any of you can shed light
on this I'd appreciate it.
