88 90Q 10v Hydraulic lifters

HI all, 
My 90q 10v w/95k has a intermittent Valve tap, someone today said it was
the lifters and not to worry  (right I just got the car)......... I just
read somewhere that the lifters are assisted by a vaccum system.  Has
anyone had this problem?  can I test something, seal something, do
something other than replace the lifters????????
