re: computer display in '88 90

Just got a 88 90q w/ 95K and have noticed some glitchs in the computer,

any help would be great:

1) driving time: sometimes goes blank or flashes 2:00>>>

First off, I think the computer functions are covered in the owner's manual.
The flashing 2:00 represents 2 hours of driving without shutting the car off
for more than about 10 minutes. Just a reminder by your car to pull over and
take a rest. It will go to 4:00, etc. if you keep going, up to at least
12:00 IME

2) fuel left in tank is not working?
This should show you range in miles until empty, using your recent fuel
consumption as a guide. When you get low, it will flash 30, then 25, then E.
*empty soon*

3) milage is not steady, bounces from 90/per to 24./per and up and down
I believe you are describing the instantaneous fuel mileage; if you put down
your right pedal, it drops, lift off, it rises. Helps you learn to save
fuel.

4) my gas milage was about avg. 32 last week and now have 20, whats

~normal for these engines ( I know this is a loaded ?)
The computer is only somewhat accurate but on my 4000q it was usually within
5 to 10%. I got from 20 to 28 mpg.

5) what is the test for the computer? I think the thing is funky? flat

line displays, fixed driving time blah blah blah
from Bentley:

Trip computer does not display: function selector switch defective, check.
Trip computer displays false values: break in wiring in wiring for trip
computer functions; correct break.
Check these first (for an '85-87 4000 quattro, coupe; may be same for 90q):
Fuse S12, S4 OK
There are function checks in bentley; you may want to wait until you get your
book.

<<6) today on a cold hah cool 54 the engine had a hard time starting,

needed to get it jumped. pain in the ass>>
Sounds like a battery problem, or could be it isn't charging properly,
search the archives as this has been thoroughly covered recently. Good
luck.
