Headlight high/low beam switch repairable?

I switched the headlights to bright last night and then couldn't
switch them back to dim. If I applied just enough pressure on
the stalk toward the position formerly known as Low, but not
too much, the lights would revert to low beam. I think I made
several other drivers nervous on my way home.

Has anyone tried to fix this one? A new switch assembly must
cost at least eleventy squillion Lire.  All help appreciated.
