Update on my noisy 1st, 3rd, & 5th gears:

Eric Fluhr and James Marriot hit the nail right on the head.  It seems
like I have been punished by the Audi gods with a broken/torn rubber
boot on the transmission linkage.  That together with some small exhaust
leaks/engine noises had me scared thinking my tranny was dying.  Has
anybody BTDT changing one of these?  Is it a mayor PITA or is it a
simple operation?  At least I can sleep now knowing that the problem is
not a serious one!
