John,
A similar car was recently totalled here in Columbus after a front end
crash. An 86 4KQ, in very good condition both interior and mechanical,
with 140k miles on it. It belonged to MAson Bender who is no longer
subscribed to the list AFAIK. The insurance co. initially offered about
$3500 for it. The owner eventually got $4800. When Mason challenged their
value the ins. co. had a problem in backing it up because they could not
find similar cars sold recently in this area, especially none with quattro.
Mason assisted the ins. co. by searching the internet to find examples
sold recently elsewhere in the country. Most examples were on the west
coast. I think he was pleased with the $4800 settlement.

I know this story because I had hoped to buy the wreck. I had problems
getting info re: the cars whereabouts and it ended up going to salvage
auction open only to licensed salvage dealers. It was sold for $200 to the
highest bidder, and of this amount Allstate got $9. Mason said he could
have bought it from the ins. co. but for some reason, which I don't
understand, he would have lost money on the deal.
bye,
Dave C.
