Had my cap off the other day. To reinstall: clip the rear/bottom first
as you did, then push the front/top clip with a long screwdriver by
reaching through the gap in the junk bolted to the top of the engine.
Worked for me. Is a PITA. (I like your wire trick.) My distributor
rattle _did_ go away with the new timing belt. Loose timing
belt=distributor rattle.
