I am amazed at how often new ur-quattro owners come up to me at area meetings
and exhibit complete ignorance of their cars. We've had one memorable case
of a man who didn't know the car had a turbo and 'wouldn't have bought it' if
he'd known. One had been charged a pretty reasonable 20v price for a 1983 WR,
and another had been charged a reasonable 1986 WR price for a 1990 20v in what
looked like excellent condition. I've even had one case of someone who'd put
a stronger spring into an MB wastegate and hadn't touched the ECU. Durrr!
At a recent area meeting I commented that four-wheel optical alignment was
necessary every now and then, and an owner agreed with me, saying he had a
'full alignment' done every 10,000 miles. As it happened, I'd just been under
the back of his car and the rear tie bars were rusted to h@ll.
We checked the printout his garage had given him with the bill. A full
Coupe GT alignment - only the front wheels, and the wrong settings for
those. He'd been going on all night about all kinds of fancy suspension
packages 'to improve the handling' - all it needed was a stock alignment.
I often wonder how many people are driving around in cars that are pale shadows
of the performance that Audi intended, merely because whoever is servicing the
car doesn't really have a clue.
